Why we built our own VMS instead of buying one

Five years operating our own fleet taught us what off-the-shelf vehicle management systems get wrong. So we built our own — and now we sell it.

Five years ago we were spending ₦42M a year on a vehicle management system from an overseas vendor that didn't understand Nigerian roads, Nigerian fuel, or Nigerian drivers.

What was wrong

Geofences that fell apart whenever the GSM signal dropped — which in some corridors is every 90 seconds. Driver-behaviour scoring calibrated to European driving styles. Fuel-level sensors that didn't correct for the angle of Nigerian roads. Customer support timezone offset that meant emergencies waited until the next morning.

What we built

We hired three engineers in 2021 and gave them one brief: rebuild the VMS from first principles, optimised for Nigerian conditions. Two and a half years later, we have a platform we run our own fleet on AND license to clients.

The features that matter: position smoothing across GSM gaps, fuel-level correction for road angle, driver scoring calibrated to actual Lagos driving data, and a 24/7 monitoring team based in Lagos that responds to alerts in under 90 seconds.

What this is worth

Three stolen vehicles recovered in the last 12 months across our deployed fleet. Average vehicle utilisation up 14% year-on-year. Insurance premiums down 22% for clients who deploy the full telemetry stack.

If you're running a fleet and your current VMS isn't built for Nigeria — talk to us.
